Stayed here a couple of days pre-cruise. This B&B is in area of town called "Esquilino." It is an ethnic area of Rome where you are as likely to see immigrants -- Chinese, Koreans, Indians, etc. -- as Italians.

I'm not normally into taking pictures of bathrooms, but this place was very modern, including the bathroom. The bathroom has a second porcelain bowl -- see left side just beyond counter -- which is an intersting-looking bidet, I guess.

We loved this place. It was clean, modern and very comfortable. I wish I had taken a photo of Katia & Sabrina, our hosts. They were great. Both spoke English fluently. Kathia was a fountain of info and advice for what to see and how to get around. Learned from her to take the Metro (subway) to visit parts of the city we wanted to see (very cheaply and easily).

That's a computer on the desk and a coffee maker (advertised on Italian TV by George Clooney). The place has Wi-Fi, which meant Ranee could use her I-Pad.

This is our balcony. Nice size. The white tent-like structure below is the entryway to the ship. Not the prettiest view -- cargo containers and the like -- but we're all too excited to care about that, having just boarded the ship. Our ship: Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas. Our point of departure: the port city of Civitavecchia, Italy, about an hour from Rome. Pronounce it, "chee vee tah vekkia."

This is the waterfront hotel where we stayed on May 19, the day before our cruise. So glad we came to this town the day before the cruise. Loved the waterfront and the cafes, as well as the town's shopping district. Good food and beautiful area. We walked from here to the port entrance, where we boarded the shuttle bus that took us to the ship. A nice, manageable walk along the waterfront if your luggage has wheels.

Beautiful area (and beautiful wife, too!); We took the train from Rome's Termini station to Civitavecchia. The trip took about an hour. Crossed the street from the train station and we were nearly at the start of this waterfront hotel area. Our hotel was about a 100 yards down from here.

Who wouldn't recognize this structure? Since we had so little time in Rome we decided to do the touristy thing -- we were, after all, tourists! -- and ride one of those hop-on, hop-off busses that took us all around the city. Loved it. Snapped a lot of photos this way. Earphones allowed us to hear a narration as we rode along. The weather was PERFECT! Seems I did well choosing the end of May as the time to visit Rome and do a Mediterranean cruise.

If you go to Kusadasi, Turkey to see the Roman ruins at Ephesus you HAVE TO visit the Terrace Houses. Incredible! You get an intimate view of how some Romans -- wealthy ones, at least -- lived. The place is so well-preserved! Wait 'til you see a close-up of the tile mosaic you can see here.

It's a large plaza. This is your view if you walk from the port entrance toward the waterfront hotel area. A very pleasant walk. About 10 minutes from port entrance to hotels. Lots of shops and cafe's along the way.

We ate here Saturday night when we saw how popular the place was...a waiting line to get in, but worth the wait. You can order, for example, 3 kinds of pizza as part of a single order. You choose from something like 30 kinds of pizza. They place the pizza on a large, elevated lazy-susan on your table. This leaves lots of room on your table for your plate, drinks, whatever. A fun place.

On our prior cruises we booked regular balcony cabins. RCI dropped the prices significantly on this cruise, making this junior suite available for just a couple of hundred dollars more than the balcony price. Jumped on that. Nice and roomy. Walk-in closet and a TUB in the bathroom.

This is a photo of a us in a regular balcony cabin aboard RCI's Liberty of the Seas in January, 2012. I just included this to show the contrast between this and the junior suite we had on the Navigator OTS. I wouldn't complain about a balcony cabin, but it gets a skosh cozy for a family of 4.

Ranee ordered a margarita (sp?) pizza at this outdoor cafe in Civitavecchia. We were expecting a plain-looking, cheese pizza. Instead, they delivered this. We were shocked. But, thought, "what the heck," and tried it. It was actually quite tasty. Don't judge pizza by its toppings, I guess.

This was at the Miramare hotel in Civitavecchia, Italy. Hotel was nice enough; comfortable. Worth noting, from what I could surmise, what we call the 2nd floor in the U.S. they call the 1st floor in Italy. We were one floor above the ground floor. Window looked out to the sea. Nice.

RCI ship designs are definitely more elegant than Carnival's rather over-the-top decor. The Navigator is still looking good 10 years or more after it was built.

Though Cruisecritic.com's Roll Call, we pullled together a group of about 12 of us to share the costs of a private tour in Athens. ("Private Greece Tours") It worked out great. Had a wonderful, knowledgeable tour guide -- I think her name is Eleni, or something close to that. This brought the price down to about 50 Euros per person and included the cost of the tour guide. We beat the crowds on board the cruise line's big tour busses. A great way to go!

I think it was 1 Euro to access the toilets here at Termini station in Rome. I know, that sounds a bit harsh to Americans. But, maybe a good idea. The funds probably help keep the place cleaner than what we often see stateside.

There is something very soothing and magical about watching the ship's wake while far off at sea. The ship's buffet restaurant, the Windjammer, is located at the aft end of the ship. You can watch the wake while eating if you get a table by the window.

The entire cruise had calm seas. But, the last day, heading back to Civitavecchia, had seas almost as smooth as glass. It seems that the end of May is a great time to cruise the Eastern Med.
